She wondered why
Why the fairytales weren't true
Why the roses on the floor were red
And not the white it was when she was wed
She now knew why
Seeing in front of her a bloody pool
And the source of it the man she loved
The roses, they were drenched in his blood
She didn't cry
She gathered the man she loved in her arms
Uncaring that her dress was now soaked
"'Till death to do us part?" she choked
He wondered how
How the world could be so cruel
As she questions the promise they gave each other moments ago
She pulls out a phone, calls an ambulance, she never let go
He knew
He knew he loved her more than life itself
He knew that life takes as it gives
And it was what gave him her as his
He couldn't cry
Not when she needed him now, not when she silently sobs
He cups her tearstained cheek ignoring the pain
The siren becomes loud, and it starts to rain
He didn't trust himself to talk
She didn't trust herself to hope
As they looked into each others eyes and read those words
Of love, of loss, of beauty and chaos
Like their favourite book, telling their story
He told her he was sorry
Sorry that he couldn't keep their promises they made
Under the giant oak's shade
She told him that she wasn't sorry
That they had found each other
Broken jagged pieces yet somehow completing each other
He smiles at her lovingly, stroking her cheek, hiding the sadness
She smiles knowing, knowing him as no one knew
Still looking into her eyes, "Our story isn't over", he rasped
Answering a question she didn't know she'd asked
She gently picks his other hand
And rests it on her unshowing belly
His smile brightens, hers too
She holds on to his hand on her cheek as it slips away
As she finally she breaks and whispers "No, it isn't"
As if their love defied death itself
Because it did
